PE

Our Intent

By the end of the Year 11 students at Pendle Vale College will:

  • Have made progress across their ‘Active ME’ and ‘ME in PE’ grades
  • Be able to articulate declarative and procedural knowledge
  • Have had the opportunity to develop their sporting ability, with a well thought out extra-curricular programme
  • Be fully aware of the importance and the benefits of Physical Education on their future life
  • Have a strong knowledge of how to lead a Healthy, active lifestyle.

Three Pillars of the Curriculum

We fully believe that PE contributes to the development of all students at Pendle Vale College through our unrelenting focus on:

  • Currency:
  • Core Skills:
  • Character:

Learning and Understanding

In order to achieve a true understanding of Physical Education, topics have been intelligently sequenced based on the following rationale:

  • During Key Stage 3 students follow a progressive and balanced programme of activities, to develop key skills, knowledge, and team play.
  • Students retain powerful knowledge in OAA, Boxing and Sport Education blocks to prepare them for the increased complexity and rigour of KS4 Sport Studies
  • During Key Stage 4 students can opt to study an examinable PE course. Students also have an additional core PE lesson, where they extend their knowledge, skills and team play and further develop their coaching and leadership skills in a range of sports activities.
  • In PE we provide a stimulating environment that gives all students the opportunity to lead an active healthy lifestyle, which we hope continues beyond school.

We seek to instil a true love of learning in all our students by:

  • ‘Normalising error’ so that expert teachers can pre-empt error as part of their planning to address gaps swiftly, and students see error as a learning opportunity.
  • By giving students regular opportunities to challenge concepts and ideas and discuss and articulate views of PE with passionate practioners in real life contexts.
  • By using a range of strategies to deepen knowledge so that it is committed to long term memory.

Personal Development

We fully believe that Physical Education contributes to the development of students at Pendle Vale through their development in five key areas:

  • Social development is where we give them opportunities to work collaboratively when problem solving through creative thinking, discussion, performance of and explaining ideas, whilst listening to and respecting others’ thoughts and opinions. This emphasised in our ‘Games’ unit, where we use the ‘Sport Education’ approach.
  • Moral development of students is promoted in all PE lessons via the understanding of rules as well as developing a sense of fair play. Students are praised and encouraged for good behaviour and positive attitude. We set high expectations of all students helping them to become valued members of society. This is continued within our KS4 offer, as students need a good awareness of this in the examination unit within the Sport Studes Course.
  • Spiritual development is highlighted when students begin to develop deep thinking when providing space for independent thought and encouraging students to reflect on their own development. Allowing opportunities for students to become self aware and reflective learners judging the reasonableness of their solutions
  • The curriculum contributes to the cultural development of students in Physical Education by encouraging them to learn new concepts, games and dances from different traditions and cultures. Students look at the diversity in sport and appreciate the differences and similarities between male and female roles and how this is constantly evolving. Again, this is promoted heavily to prepare for students for the demands of our Sport Studies course.
  • Personal development in PE is taught through our ‘My Personal Best”, which gives opportunities for students to develop a wide range of life and employability skills including; Resilience; Responsibility; Self Motivation; Integrity; Self Management; communication Skills; Collaboration; Empathy; Innovation. We now assess our students on these traits and these will get reported termly, further promoting the importance of these.

Equality

The Physical Education curriculum ensures that any potential equality issues are mitigated by:

  • Enabling students to work in groups of similar ability.
  • Providing additional support for students who need it, this could be done with the use of PE specific Teaching assistants.
  • Giving all students the opportunity to take part and perform to the best of their ability.

Homework

Our belief is that homework should be a deliberate practice of what has been modelled and taught in lessons, as well as interleaved revision to ensure students are embedding previously learn knowledge but also developing high level skills alongside powerful knowledge. All Science homework is meaningful and contributes towards students’ progress. KS3 tasks focuses on literacy and key terminology and KS4 focuses on long term memory; repetition and retrieval.

Careers, Opportunities and beyond the Curriculum

Opportunities are built in to make links to the world of work to enhance the careers, advice and guidance that students are exposed to including:

Research Led

The Physical Education curriculum at Pendle Vale has been influenced by:

  • The difference that high quality physical education and school sport can make to young people’s lives is quite remarkable (AfPE)
  • The PE National curriculum
  • Ofsted’s subject review and the 3 I’s
  • Teacher and student opinion obtained through meetings, formal and informal interviews conducted by sports captains and questionnaire results.
